While traveling in NYC, I came across a display of Louis Vuitton luggage and learned how the brand began establishing itself.....by selling lightweight trunks to travel aka as "luggage". In 1858, 

Vuitton introduced his flat-topped trunks with trianon canvas, making them lightweight and airtight...the rest was history..
